Governor Recommends Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum to Operate as an Independent Agency
February 18, 2015The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency currently manages the state's historic sites, such as Lincoln's Tomb, the Old State Capitol, Cahokia Mounds, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM). Except for ALPLM, Rauner wants the management of these sites to be transferred to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). These programs will be administered by DCEO's Illinois Tourism Office. According to Rauner, transferring the historic sites to DCEO will save $5.7 million.
The fiscal year 2016 budget recommendation is $15,175,000 for the ALPLM to operate as an independent agency. While this is a $425,000 increase from their fiscal year 2015 appropriation, other budget lines allow the general fund transfer into the Presidential Library and Museum Operating Fund to be $ 2 million less than fiscal year 2016.
At their November 2015 meeting, the ILA Executive Board voted to support legislation to separate the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum from the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, making it its own state agency.
