Reporting Relationships
Reports to: Director of Library Services with functional (dotted-line) work direction on acquisition and cataloging duties from the Technical Services Librarian.
Supervision Exercised: General guidance exercised over student workers.
 
Job Summary:
Performs responsible and varied technical library services in the purchasing, processing, receiving, cataloging, maintenance and retention of library materials. Is also cross-trained to perform a variety of routine and special project tasks across library departments that support the overall strategic priorities of the library and the users it serves.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

  1. Order and process materials for addition to the library collection.
  2. Perform bibliographic searching by checking standard automated tools, such as OCLC, GOBI or other information systems and searching the integrated library system to determine if materials are in the collection or on order.
  3. Prepare and generate orders via acquisitions subsystem of the integrated library system.
  4. Receive shipments, including identifying and resolving problems resulting from incorrect or incomplete shipments, processing claims, notifying requestors, and forwarding invoices to Accounts Payable for payment.
  5. Maintain all acquisition files, including orders and receipt of orders, cancellations, claims, departmental requests, and invoicing for the production of statistical reports as required.
  6. Initiate and track requisitions in the college financial system (Colleague), working with purchasing and accounting departments to coordinate procedures.
  7. Provide assistance in cataloging.
  8. Correspond and communicate on a variety of matters with vendors and others.
  9. Prepare items for circulation and mend damaged library materials.
  10. Assist with annual inventory of library collection.
  11. Assist with displays, marketing, outreach activities, and advocating for the library.
  12. Assist at circulation desk and in collaboration with librarians and library staff.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.
  14. Flexible to meet current library hours of operation.
  15. Align conduct with all values, expectations, and ethics as outlined in the RVC Employee Handbook.
  16. Regular attendance is expected.
  17. Using tact and courtesy, the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with persons contacted in the course of work. 


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities  

  1. Knowledge of general library principles, practices, and terminology.  
  2. Knowledge of procedures and standards for the processing and maintenance of library materials
  3. Knowledge of customer service standards and best practices in libraries
  4. Willingness to maintain skills in above mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate library skills learning experiences
  5. Critical thinking and good time management
  6. Knowledge of English grammar and spelling
  7. Effective oral and written communications skills
  8. Ability to work with a diverse population

Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree or certificate in a library technical program or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. One year of library work experience is required. Experience with library acquisitions and copy cataloging. Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications is required. Must possess capacity and willingness to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented, proactive, service environment and have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a typical library/office environment.

Physical Demands
     1. Ability to reach, bend, stoop, and lift up to 20lbs
     2. Ability to push carts of library materials weighing up to 50lbs.
