Censorship is a major threat in Illinois schools and public libraries. Attempts to ban books from libraries are rising at an unprecedented level across the country. If you hear about a situation near you, or in your community, please reach out to request help. Our goal is to connect you with someone in your region to support readers in your local area.
A coalition of Illinois library organizations including ILA, AISLE, RAILS, IHLS, and CARLI are seeking to create regional teams of local school, academic, and public library staff who would be willing to get involved on a local level to help preserve intellectual freedom.
At its November 17, 2022, meeting the ILA board voted unanimously to become an organizational partner of Unite Against Book Bans. Partner organizations represent parents, educators and librarians, students and readers, authors and publishers, community and advocacy organizations, businesses and workers, nonprofits and faith groups, elected officials and civic leaders, and concerned citizens who are united against book bans.
