Tell Congress Why Libraries Must Be Protected – In Your Own Words!
March 7, 2025
Since ALA announced the Show Up For Our Libraries campaign after the Inauguration, we’ve seen a barrage of attacks on a wide array of federal agencies, programs, and policies. Unfortunately, in the year ahead, we expect continued efforts to slash the federal budget. ALA, like many of you, is concerned about the broad-reaching effects of these efforts and other newly implemented policies and decisions.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services, the only source of federal funding dedicated to libraries, has not been targeted yet. We know that can change in the blink of an eye. Every member of Congress needs to know why libraries are not just a “nice to have,” but a necessity – before IMLS is attacked.
Tell Congress to protect libraries
Communities – schools, campuses and towns – need libraries now more than ever, and libraries need federal support. To preserve IMLS funding, policymakers need to have positive, personal connections with library advocates, who know better than anyone that the best way to connect with someone is through a story.
The most powerful stories are local – they’re about how your library is changing lives and addressing community priorities, right where you live. At this pivotal moment in our nation’s decision making, we are asking you Show Up For Our Libraries. Use our advocacy portal to send your Congressmembers a personal message, explaining why library funding is crucial and asking them to support federal funding for libraries.
There is no script for this message to your Congressmembers – your story is the message.
