A Message from ILA Executive Director Cynthia Robinson

December 30, 2024

As 2024 comes to a close, it’s clear this has been a year of both challenges and triumphs. We’ve stood strong against those who seek to undermine the freedom to read, often resorting to unprecedented tactics to prevent library professionals from doing their important work.

Amid these struggles, there have been victories. One significant accomplishment is the implementation of Public Act 103-0100, which prevents book bans and promotes the freedom to read in public libraries and school libraries. Governor JB Pritzker signed the bill into law in 2023 and HB 2789 became a law on January 1, 2024. Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias received the 2024 ILA Robert R. McClarren Legislative Development Award, for his support of the legislation, which was the first law of its kind.

Our new Strategic Plan will guide our association for the next five years, with the mission of advocacy, equity, learning, and engagement, for the benefit of Illinois libraries. The State Library rolled out the new statewide database package this year, which will save millions of dollars every year. And, ILA launched the More Than a Building campaign, which provides libraries with the tools and support to unite the library community and to activate stakeholders to take action in support of their libraries in difficult times.

As we enter 2025, we recognize that uncertainty lies ahead. No matter what challenges arise, we remain steadfast in our mission to advocate for the freedom to read, for libraries, and for the library workers who serve our communities. We will also continue to advance our efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion, striving to build a more inclusive and equitable profession.

We are grateful for your support and standing alongside us in our advocacy efforts this year. We hope you will continue to stand with us and support our work in whatever way you can, whenever you can.

Here’s to resilience, progress, and the work still to come.

Cynthia M. Robinson
