17th Annual Information Literacy Summit: An Interview with Tish Hayes
Illinois Association of College & Research Libraries Forum (IACRL)
March 12, 2018By Andrea Jakubas
Illinois Institute of Technology
The 17th Annual Information Literacy Summit, presented by DePaul University Library and Moraine Valley Community College Library, will be held on Friday, April 20, 2018 on the Moraine Valley Community College campus in Palos Hills.
Char Booth, Associate Dean of the University Library at California State University San Marcos, will deliver this year’s keynote address.
Tish Hayes, Information Literacy Librarian at Moraine Valley Community College and one of the event’s organizers, provided additional insight to this year’s conference.
IACRL: How did the planning committee develop this year's theme of "Teaching for Curiosity, Creativity, and Action?"
Tish Hayes: In planning for this year's theme, we wanted to make explicit the connections we see between information literacy and curiosity, creativity, and action. We kept trying to pick one of those aspects to focus on, but the more we talked, we realized how connected they are. We hope to extend the conversations begun at past Summits about how the ACRL Framework and critical librarianship can be used in transforming our teaching practice and connecting and collaborating with our communities, especially our students.
IACRL: What is the history of the IL Summit and how has it evolved over the years?
TH: The Summit has evolved quite a bit over the past 17 years. For years, the Summit was a conference that happened at three locations across Illinois: Illinois State University Milner Library, John A. Logan College, and Moraine Valley. We would share a keynote speaker, but host unique breakout sessions at each location. As that model no longer became sustainable, Moraine Valley began the partnership with DePaul. We really want conversations across the widest possible variety of institutions, so it's been fantastic to have the perspectives of librarians from both a university and community college as we make decisions about themes and breakout sessions.
IACRL: What do you most look forward to about this event?
TH: We've been really lucky to have extraordinary keynote presenters and great breakout sessions year after year, but I think that we most look forward to spending a day connecting with other librarians who care about how and why we teach information literacy. I always learn and am inspired by these colleagues across institutions who are all doing important and interesting work rooted in their academic communities.
