Legislative Update -- April 17, 2025

April 18, 2025

Today, Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias shared a message to the Illinois library community. The message is about proposed legislation to improve security at libraries and enhance safety for librarians across Illinois.

House Bill 2747 and Senate Bill 1550, which were introduced in the General Assembly earlier this year, were both approved last week in their respective chambers. The bills would allow the Secretary of State’s office to issue funding grants to increase security measures at public, school, and academic libraries.

Friday, April 11, was the Illinois General Assembly 3rd Reading bill passage deadline. Unless an individual bill was granted a deadline extension, all proposals that did not advance out of its chamber were re-referred back to the House Rules and Senate Assignments Committee and precluded from further consideration.

The House of Representatives stands adjourned until Tuesday, April 22, to refer Senate Bills to committee for potential consideration next week. The Illinois Senate stands adjourned through Tuesday, April 29, but staff have begun reviewing bills that have arrived in that chamber to date.

ILA’s Bill Monitoring has been updated as of April 14.
