Update on Executive Order Impacting IMLS
March 18, 2025
On Friday night, March 14, an executive order was issued by the Trump administration calling for the elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the nation’s only federal agency for America’s libraries.
In FY2024, the Illinois State Library received $5,736,330 through the Grants to State Library Administrative Agencies. This document explains how Illinois’ FY2024 funding was used.
We encourage you to call or send a message to Senators Durbin and Duckworth and your Congress Member. Tell them what’s at stake if the order stands: the future of American libraries. If you’re not sure who your Congress Member is click here.
Many national organizations are advocating for libraries and museums across the country:
-
American Library Association (ALA) and their Show Up for Our Libraries campaign
-
EveryLibrary and the EveryLibrary Institute
We need every library supporter to show up and make their voices heard. As we learn more in the coming days, we will keep you updated with opportunities to take action and show up for libraries.
