Join YASF at 10:30am, February 16, for a professional development session, Fake News: Teens & Media Literacy.
Instead of holding a full YASF meeting before this program, they will focus time and energy on professional development.
"Media literacy education – learning to apply critical thinking skills to media messages and make thoughtful choices about creating their own messages – is more important than ever. Join us to hear from two different presenters on their work teaching teens these crucial skills. We’ll begin with a pre-recorded session with high school students Sofia and Agatha, co-directors of activist group Teens for Press Freedom, who will share the origin of their teen-run educational nonprofit, their current projects, and give their insights into how teens interact with the internet and how we, as librarians, can help. After a short break, we’ll have a live session with New Trier High School faculty librarians Raquelle Brennan and Susan Peterson, who have developed a flexible, modular system to help teens learn to evaluate sources online that is adaptable to different types of library programs. They will talk about their experiences guiding students and give tips and tricks on developing your own media literacy skills as well as those of your teens."
