Legislative Update -- September 1, 2022
September 1, 2022Public Library Trustee Vacancies
Public Act 102-0977, which was effective May 27, 2022, established the length of time a district library board has to fill a vacancy at 90 days. If the vacancy isn’t filled within 90 days, the Secretary of State, as State Librarian, has the authority to appoint a trustee in the ensuing 60 days. If the board and Secretary of State are unable to fill the vacancy, the vacancy will be filled at the next election.
Friday, August 26 was the deadline for 9 libraries in Illinois that have not filled trustee vacancies. The Secretary of State’s office will be running legal notices with information on how to submit an application. The deadline to submit is Monday, September 12. Letters of application can be sent to the Director of the Illinois State Library, Gwendolyn Brooks Building, 300 S. 2nd St.,Springfield, IL, 62701-1796.
