Census 2020 Update
November 18, 2019- Congratulations to Destiny Chapman, a junior at Lewistown High School, for her winning entry in the Illinois State Library's poster contest! ISL has sent a poster to all Illinois public libraries.
- New Resource! The Reaching Across Illinois Library System has received a $750,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services and the Pritzker Administration to encourage participation in the Census. There will be an opportunity for sub-recipients to apply for funds; please stay tuned for future announcements.
- During the census presentation at the ILA Annual Conference in Tinley Park, a question came up about the Census identification code that will be sent to households ahead of the opening of the Census response period: What if respondents come into the library without it? We have confirmed that respondents WILL be able to complete the Census without it. From the U.S. Census Bureau's publication "2020 Census Detailed Operational Plan for: 13. Non-ID Processing Operation," p. 2: "The 2020 Census respondents will have the opportunity to fill out their census questionnaire online using their preassigned Census ID. In addition, respondents will be given the option of going to the Census website and completing the questionnaire without an ID." They will be able to do that by using their street address.
