Health Science Librarians of Illinois Update

Illinois Association of College & Research Libraries Forum (IACRL)

October 1, 2018

Eric Edwards, Illinois State Library

The Health Science Librarians of Illinois held their annual conference from September 26 to 28 at the Cliffbreakers Riverside Hotel & Conference Center (also known as Riverview Inn & Suites) in Rockford, IL. The theme of this year’s gathering was “Rivers of Data, Streams of Knowledge.” A number of speakers addressed this topic, including keynote speaker Dr. Kristi Holmes of Northwestern University, who gave the presentation “Thirsting for Knowledge: Opportunities for Librarians in the Age of Data.” Other presentations and continuing-education sessions covered a wide range of topics, from data management and building partnerships with faculty to communicating research in a digital environment and managing one’s scholarly identity online. New to this year’s event were lightning talks, or short presentations on specific topics, such as what to do when a fire extinguisher explodes in the library, or how to help students prepare a strong resume.

Make sure to check the Health Science Librarians of Illinois general website for information on other continuing-education opportunities, especially those offered through the National Network of Libraries of Medicine – Greater Midwest Region, of which HSLI is a member. For any questions about the organization, including opportunities to become involved, please contact President Royden Jones at jones_royden@yahoo.com, or Past President Miranda Shake at mshake@lakeviewcol.edu
