Statement of Concern

As we approach the 2025 Executive Board election, we must address the pressing challenges confronting our libraries today. Recent developments have underscored the critical need for proactive leadership and advocacy to safeguard our institutions' foundational principles.

Notably, legislative actions in various states have sought to restrict access to certain materials in public and school libraries. Book challenges are increasing, and support for libraries has waned, as seen at Western Illinois University.

In addition to these legislative challenges, libraries are grappling with financial constraints that are leading to reduced services. Support for the library organizations that help libraries survive is crucial.

As we elect new leaders to the ILA Executive Board, it is crucial to select individuals who are committed to defending the freedom to read, ensuring equitable access to information, and advocating for the necessary resources to maintain comprehensive library services. Our libraries serve as bastions of knowledge, inclusivity, and community engagement; safeguarding these values must remain our utmost priority.

I hope to contribute my voice and experiences to the ILA's efforts to continue supporting libraries of all types.
