Message from the Trustee Forum President - Tom Stagg
This is my first presidential message for the Trusty Trustee, and I'd like to thank the outgoing president, Kathy Caudill, for her hard work and dedication over the past year. She advocated for the forum as well as the valuable trustee continuing education opportunities. Thank you, Kathy, for your work for trustees around the state of Illinois.
Let me introduce myself, I am a trustee at the Alpha Park Public Library in Bartonville, IL which is in Peoria County. I am also a student at Illinois Central College finishing degrees in Library Technical Assistance and Art. When you hear someone mention libraries, they always want to know what your favorite book is. My answer would be a set of databases that are utilized in my studies. It's encouraging to see that the ILA Public Policy Committee is advocating for statewide database legislation so that everyone can access databases.
I am retired from 40 plus years in transportation and what is now the new buzz words Supply Chain Management. That experience has helped me understand how Illinois' great Interlibrary Loan system works. Almost 17,000,000 book and resources were transferred between libraries in Illinois last year.
There is a wide range of programs for trustees in the New Year. The next events for ILA are the Library Legislative Meet-ups. I would recommend that trustees attend because there will be a large number of legislators present. This is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your support and advocate for libraries.
The Trustee Forum Board will recommend trustee training topics and speakers for the Spring Trustee Training in the new year. Three additional trustee training meetings will be available via Zoom. Look for announcements in future ILA Alerts.
The Trustee Forum Board is here to help library trustees across the state; if you have any topics or questions about trustee matters, please email ILAtrusteeforum@gmail.com.
Be safe, and I look forward to speaking with trustees across Illinois. Remember to advocate for libraries whenever and wherever you can. As we face new challenges, the importance of libraries grows. Be strong in supporting your library.
Regards,
Tom Stagg
President, ILA Trustee Forum
